Both work — they’re just suited to different pieces. Here’s how to decide whether to stop in for a walk-in or book an appointment for your next tattoo.
When a walk-in makes sense
Walk-ins are great when you want ink today and your idea is relatively small and straightforward — classic flash, simple lettering, a small symbol, or a design you don’t need heavily customized. At For the People we welcome walk-ins when an artist is available; calling ahead at (512) 662-3483 saves you a trip if the day is busy.
Walk-ins are ideal for
- Small to medium designs
- Classic and traditional flash
- Simple lettering and symbols
- Spur-of-the-moment pieces when you’re ready
When to book an appointment
Appointments shine for larger or highly custom work — big portraits, sleeves, detailed Japanese-style compositions, and cover-ups. Booking ahead does two important things: it guarantees you dedicated chair time, and it gives your artist time to prepare a custom design before you arrive. For anything you’ve been planning for a while, an appointment is almost always the better experience.
Appointments are ideal for
- Large or multi-session pieces
- Custom designs that need drawing time
- Cover-ups and reworks (which always start with a consult)
- Specific artist requests and specific dates
Either way: start with a free consultation
Not sure which bucket your idea falls into? That’s exactly what a consultation is for, and ours are always free. We’ll look at your references, talk placement and sizing, and tell you honestly whether you’re a walk-in or better off booking a session.
How to prepare (for both)
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. You must be 18+ to get tattooed in Texas.
- Eat beforehand and hydrate. A good meal makes for a smoother session.
- Bring clear references and a rough idea of placement and size.
- Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the placement area.
Ready when you are — walk in, or book ahead for bigger work.
