Turn an old, faded, or unwanted tattoo into something you love. Cover-ups are some of the most rewarding — and most technical — work we do.
How cover-ups work
Covering an existing tattoo is a puzzle: the new design has to work with the old one’s size, darkness, and placement. Experienced artists use strategic shading, darker values, and clever composition to absorb the old piece into something new. Darker and larger designs generally give the most flexibility. Some heavily saturated or very dark tattoos may need fading (or laser lightening) before a clean cover-up is possible — and we’ll tell you honestly which path is right for you.
Cover-up consultations at For the People
Because every cover-up depends on what’s already there, we always start with a free consultation. Bring a clear, well-lit photo of the existing tattoo (or stop in) and we’ll talk through what’s realistically possible and design a custom solution. Black & grey and bold color are both powerful cover-up tools.
Good to know
- Darker, larger designs cover the most
- Very dark tattoos may need lightening first
- Reworks can refresh a piece instead of fully covering it
- Honest assessment, always free
